Good hair days start with good wash days– here are 6 shower routine tips & tricks to keep your hair healthy:
1. Less is more: Avoid washing your hair every day
This first tip is not-so-secret but still so important to add! Over washing your hair will strip it of its natural oils that your scalp produces. Because of this your scalp will actually begin to work harder to produce even more oil and leave you with an oily scalp. If you’re in the process of training your hair, try using our dry shampoo in between hair-washing days.
2. Lukewarm water
This ones hard for me too 😂 but exposing your strands to super-high temperatures leaves them dry and brittle. Even though there’s no exact temperature that's been proven to be ideal, it’s best to stick to warm water rather than hot. Just before stepping out of the shower, try rinsing off with cool/cold water. While warm water opens up the cuticle, cold water will help seal your cuticle shut.
3. Choose a shampoo for your hair type
Choose the right shampoo for you! One of the first steps to haircare is identifying your hair type and choosing a formula right for your hair type. Be aware of your hair type, texture and porosity, and select products that match your needs. If you’re not sure, talk to your hairdresser and find the right fit for you.
4. Apply shampoo only to the scalp & gently massage
The purpose of shampoo is to cleanse, remove dirt, dead skin cells and product buildup from your scalp. After you shampoo your scalp, the ends will be cleansed as your shampoo rinses off. By adding shampoo directly to the ends of your hair, it will only strip it of its natural oils and leave it looking dry and dull.
5. Patience is key for conditioner
When you add conditioner to the ends of your hair {more specifically mid-shaft downwards}, it’s important to leave your conditioner for at least 5-7 minutes to reap the benefits of a deep condition. ✨ Pro tip: while the product is still in your hair, use a wide-tooth detangling comb to gently detangle and distribute the conditioner evenly throughout all your hair.
6. Avoid drying harshly
Although you may be done with your shower, your job isn’t finished. Your hair is in its most vulnerable state when it’s wet, so taking care of your hair after a shower is just as vital. Aggressive brushing out of the shower will literally shred your hair, so take your time to be careful and if anything use a wide-tooth comb to gently detangle. In addition to brushing, avoid rubbing your hair dry with rough materials, including some towels. Gently squeeze or pat your hair with a soft towel like our Gimme Twist and air dry as much as possible.
